Most hare scrambles are 1.5-2 hours long, which doesn't sound that bad until you consider that you don't get to take any breaks.  I used to take for granted all the time I'd spend stopped during a normal weekend ride, especially after a crash.  But in a race, you have to pick yourself up and keep going right away.

That said, I agree with the cardio comments.  See if you can do something active for 2 hours straight - even if it's just yardwork or light jogging/walking.  If you can do that, then you're ready for your first race!  From there, the advice of weights and core excercises can definitely make you more competitive and reduce the post-race fatigue, but it's not 100% necessary if you just want to have fun.

Not to overlook the obvious... the best way to train for 2 hours of all-out riding is to spend more time riding!  (I know... easier said than done!)
